ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The author wishes to express his gratitude to all those, who in diverse ways helped in the preparation of this thesis.

I am particularly grateful to Mr. E. K. A. Tamakloe, Department of Planning U. S.T. for permission to use his material collected on urban travel characteristics in Tamale, and for his guidance and supervision throughout the preparation of this thesis. My gratitude also goes to Mr. J. Mensah-Quainoo, of the Building and Road Research Institute, Kumasi, who willingly accepted the role of supervisor following the departure of Mr. E. K.A. Tamakloe. His timely comments and suggestions are very much appreciated.

All the technical staff of the Tamale Town Planning Office deserve some mention for all the help given me during the data collection stage of his study. My gratitude goes to Mr. S.B. Amissah, my Year Master for his comments and suggestions at various states of the study.

Finally, but not the least, Mr. Boateng should be thanked for typing this sript.
