In this report the present status of research work on bicycle usage in cities of Africa is presented, which is based on a review of the literature and furthermore includes the results of preliminary field work. This research work was conducted in Burkina Faso and Ghana from March 3rd to April l5th, 1987.

The objective of this initial trip was to prepare for the main research work that is to take place from February to June 1988. It was possible to choose suitable cities for the study as well as obtain necessary research permits, select qualified interviewers and collect information in discussions, by reviewing the literature and through observation of the traffic situation. A pre-test was conducted in the Ghanaian city of Tamale using a previously designed questionnaire.
