The Bicycle in Zimbabwe

Homepage Manual Contents Navigation

Notes

  1. The bicycles donated by UNICEF are imported from overseas: Scandinavian Raleighs, with 26 x 1 1/2". The usual sizes in Zimbabwe are 26 x 1 3/8 " or 26 x 1 3/3", so these tyres are difficult to replace.
  2. Zimbabwe Poad Infrastructure, Ministry of Roads and Road Traffic, Post and Telecommunications. see page 3 and 13.3., page 29.
  3. Interview with Dr. Nzuwah, first Secretary of the ministry of Roads and Road Traffic, 18 November,1983.
  4. By 'semi-manufactured' we mean that the mudguards and sprockets are cut out of imported sheetsteel, the handle bars and carriers are made of tubes, manufactured in Zimbabwe but the strip from which tubes can be made comes from South Africa etc etc.
  5. We had discussions with Mr. Lieberman about the quality of the frame and the use of the rod brakes hoth subject to frequent breakage. He made the impression that the clients should more adapt to the bikes than the other way around. The same with the prices of the bicycle.
  6. Interview with 'Manica cycles', 8 November,1983
  7. Second interview with Mr. Lieberman, 4 November 1983.
  8. Interview with 'Cycle Works', 11 November, 1983.
  9. According to CACI there is no market for coasterbrakes in Zimbabwe. Our conviction is that it has to do with the difficulties in obtaining spare-parts for it. We even would favour coaster brakes when people are used to carry loads on the handle bars damaging the rods of the brakes by doing so.
  10. Cold Comfort and St. Peters Kubatana give facilities to training courses organized with the help of Zimbabwe Projects.
